Geographies of Music

a)    What genre of music you listened to: Electronic Music

b)    The Origins of that genre: At the end of the 19th century, electronic devices for performing were developed. Leading up to the 1940’s, magnetics audio tape also allowed for taping sound and modifying them with the change of speed or direction. In the early 1960’s, live electronics became a pioneer. Towards the end of the 20th century the Mini Moog became the most widely used synthesizer in electronic music. In recent years, computer technology has allowed the interaction with higher class music production technology, including laptop performance practices and live coding. Software based studios have emerged with completely computer made sounds being generated, allowing for this growing genre.

c)    The specific artist you listened to: Crane

How the music is connected to global change: This music is connected to global change due to the evolution of electronic music being connected with the expansion of technology in the world. This artist clearly uses computer software technology in order to create his music, showing global change where can computers use the sole instrument for music. The triple J unearthed website itself also shows global change with the globalisation involved, allowing anyone around the world to access and listen to this unsigned Australian artist. The song ‘New Era’, by Crane, specifically highlights global change in the world due through the title of a new era. This title could be seen as attempting to display a ‘new era’ of music being dominated by electronic music due to global change.
